Gothic 3 is the third installment of the Gothic series, released in 2006.

Plot[]

Main story[]

Main theme of the game revolves around War of Gods, a conflict between Innos, Adanos and Beliar. Orcs have almost completely taken over the kingdom of Myrthana, occupying nearly all farms, villages and cities, and are in cooperation with Zuben, the mighty ruler of Hashinshin, and with Xardas, who with no regard for Nameless' stance on this matter, have struck a deal with the orcs in order to make his research easier.

Once arrived in the mainlan, The Hero's first goal is to make contact with Xardas, so that he could elaborate on his brief words he used durning their previous encounter aboard Esmeralda. On his way to the mage, he explores numerous cities and settlements, performing side quests that would decide the outcome of the conficts raging within the continent. Finally, Nameless Hero manages to find Xardas's tower in the cold mountains of Nordmar. It turned out his supposed betrayal and siding with Beliar was just a smokescreen, as these actions merely allowed him to search for artifacts needed to execute his real plan – putting an end to the "War of Gods". In order to achieve his goal, he needs 5 artifacts of Adanos scattered across the world, so that he could banish the gods and free human realm from their influence.

After all 5 artifacts are collected, The Hero has three possible options, each one resulting in different ending:

  • To end the War of Gods. He will be tasked with finding "The Scepter of Varant" and "The Staff of the Eternal Wanderer", both of which have to be forcefully taken away from Rhobar II and Zuben. Xardas then reveals that the only way to put an end to the conflict is to completely erase the divine influence from this world. Nameless Hero is tasked with destroying the artifacts in the ore furnace of Hammer Clan. Once over, him and The Necromancer head off to the portal leading to unknown lands, because both of them are also bearers of divine powers, and to completely fulfill the plan they need to disappear. The War of Gods ends in a stalemate, while people and the orcs eventually learn to coexist.
  • To serve Innos, sacrificing the artifacts to him. God of light will reveal himself to Nameless Hero, exposing his will, which is to liberate Myrthana from orcish occupation, and kill a powerful servant of Beliar – Zuben. Once his will is fulfilled, Innos wins the war, and lets The Hero to have a brief look into the future.
  • To serve Beliar. Similarly to Innos' path, the artifacts of Adanos need to be sacrificed to the God of Darkness. Once revealed himself, his will is to kill Xardas which betrayed him, Rhobar II – high servant of Innos, his own servant – Zuben and orc commanders which ceased to respond acording to his will. Once completed, Beliar wins the war and lets The Hero have a brief look into the future.

Nordmar – northern part of the continent. Cold weather makes it a harsh place for adventurers. It houses 3 major clans – Fire Clan, Hammer Clan and Wolf Clan. In addition Monastery of Fire as well as Xardas' Tower can be found there. It's also where weapons from pure ore are forged. The entire country is riddled with hostile orcish posts.

Varant – southern part of the continent. Due to Innos' curse the entire country is covered in sand. Inhabited by the hashinshin people lead by Zyben, whose headquarters is situated in Ishtar. It's home to nomads and magicians of water, and a cemetery to forgotten ruins and cities of the ancients.

There are also other lands bordering with the mainland, to which the player has no access:

Northern lands – northern part of the contintent (more so than Nordmar), inhabited by orcs. Due to harsh weather and lack of food, the orcs were forced to invade human lands, firstly Nordmar, then Myrthana.
